Young Man brutally assaulted by a city guard

IMG_20190322_145147A video has gone viral showing a young man brutally assaulted by a city guard.

The incident believed to have happened in Agona Swedru in the Central Region on Thursday captured the man, whose identity is unconfirmed, surrounded by a crowd while kneeling by the roadside.

Without warning a heavy boot from a Metropolitan guard of the Swedru Municipal Assembly smashed his head from behind, tumbling his frame to the ground amidst creams from the crowd as a police officer surges forward to intervene.

The video, which became a subject of discussion on the Joy FM Super Morning Show  Friday saw many listeners of the station accusing the police of insensitivity and complicity in the assault.

But the police in a sharp response have parried the accusation claiming they have already launched investigation into the incident.

Speaking on the SMS Friday Public Relation Officer of the Central Region Police, Irene Oppong said the police officer who witnessed the incident was not cheering on. She insists it is her report that led to the ongoing investigation into the matter.

“The good news is that they are coming from an institution that can easily be identified. In the video, you could see the police officer making an attempt for the city guard to stop assaulting the boy, so she did what she could in the area of prevention of crime,” she said.

According to her, officers of the citiguard have also been invited to help in the ongoing investigation.

The police administration has subsequently issued a statement which collaborates the account of the Central Regional police account.

Police relationship with civilians have come under criticisms in recent times.

On Wednesday Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, apologised for the assault on three Ghanaian Times journalist by a group of police officers in Accra last week.

The two journalists, Malik Sulemana and Raissa Sambou together with their driver were assaulted by a Policeman with the help of 10 other men in uniform.

This was after the officer jumped a traffic light and ran into their vehicle.

In another incident, a driver and his mate physically assaulted a police officer who pursued them after the driver of the bus jumped red light. The two are currently standing trial.
